19th Anniversary Sale & Show

Lincoln Square Pottery Studio - Learning center is excited to announce its 19th Anniversary Sale & Show on Saturday, April 23rd. The event will run from 1-6pm, giving attendees plenty of time to browse through student artwork, watch live demonstrations and catch up with artists and friends.

LSPS-LC celebrates another year made possible by its supporters; volunteers and students. Our volunteers take time to unload kilns, create glaze sample tiles, and even use their skills to build pedestals and shelving to display work. Our students come back year-after-year, fill our classes and dutifully wearing their masks through winter sessions. This show and sale will honor them, as well as showcase their ceramic creations. More than 40 artists will have their best pottery available during the event, including unique items such as air plant wall pods, miniature toad sculptures, butt vases (think legs and behind as vessel) and cheeky tchotchkes. Of course beautiful vases, votive candle holders, plates and mugs will be also be available!

This year, LSPS-LC volunteers will be showing off their ceramic skills during live demos that will play out at the top of each hour. This is meant to encourage onlookers to be inspired by the process, and maybe try the medium themselves.

Demonstrations start at 1pm and will run as long as the artist needs to complete their piece. The studio’s Instructor, Meg Biddle, will be sculpting a portrait bust by using the pinch method. Artists Paul Schultz and Mieke Zuiderweg are doing slab-building demos. Schultz’s background in design and architecture will drive him to assemble a luminary in the shape of a Chicago style bungalow. Zuiderweg will be building one of her Brutalist-inspired planters with pre-cut slabs. Wheel-throwing aces Alice Huang Hollowed and Rich Zimmerman will demonstrate their talents by concentrating on vessel forms. Huang Hollowed will spin a tall vase made of multi-colored porcelain, while Zimmerman will apply slip (liquid clay) to create whimsical decorations on his vessels. Artist Allen Frierson will be applying his intense drawing skills to the surface of a sculptural bisque piece with glaze pens.

The studio hosts a Buy-A-Cup Benefit during this show, which encourages the public to make a donation in exchange for an artisan-made cup (which is then filled with a delicious libation). All proceeds from this benefit will go to The Otter Society, Friends of the Chicago River. By restoring and revitalizing the conditions of the river, the organization hopes to see more North American river otters return to the great natural resource.

LSPS-LC is open to all who wish to enjoy this event, but request that everyone wear a mask upon entering. Part of the success of the space is due to the kindness everyone shows each other. By wearing a mask, we keep everyone safe, especially those students and volunteers that are immunocompromised.

Artists featured at table spaces during the 19th Anniversary Sale & Show are Joseph Ann, Jessica McCartney, Richard Zeid, Melanie Liss, Morgan Bates, Anneliese Moy, Alice Huang Hollowed and Atticus Zavelle.

Please come and spend an afternoon with us to support local artists, enjoy live demonstrations as well as connecting with one another. We are located at 4150 N. Lincoln Avenue in Chicago.
