Kathleen Kane

Kathleen Kane (1983, Chicago) landed at Lincoln Square Pottery Studio - Learning Center in 2015 after trying her hand at mosaics, painting and bead making.

Kathleen Kane says that it was during the first wheel-throwing session that she knew ceramics were the perfect creative outlet. She loved the class and sense of community so much that it took her six sessions to move onto the next level! Her close connection with teacher Meg Biddle finally gave her the confidence to advance and believe in her own artistic abilities.

Kathleen's work is well known at the studio, and is starting to gain momentum in the fair circuit as well. She starts her pieces as if she's creating a plate on the wheel, slowly pulling up the sides and then arching them in towards the middle. Her results are a variety of artisan wall pods that hold air plants and succulents. The work goes through wood, raku or luster firings and feature decals and studio glazes. The artist prefers to make each piece unique because she enjoys the challenge and creativity it takes to make a one-of-a-kind item. The work is inspired by nature and her affinity towards the circle as an aesthetic shape. It represents a continuous cycle, with the plant embodying growth and life.

Kathleen joined LSPS-LC at the Glenwood Avenue Arts Fest in Chicago last year. She enjoyed showcasing and selling her work so much that she spent the next few months creating enough pieces to be featured in NINE holiday related fairs! Her enthusiasm for taking part in art fairs has spilled over into 2018 as well; she'll be showing at "Art in Wilder Park" in Elmhurst in May. This 2-day show features more than one hundred artists and attracts a lot of enthusiasts.

We wish Kathleen the best on her ceramic adventures, and hope that more LSPS-LC students are inspired by her story and take their own work to the next level!
