Mickey Nuccio

Art has always been a touchstone in the life of Mickey Nuccio (Chicago, 1946). The artist’s parents were both serious about their hobbies of weaving and painting, and as a result, Nuccio made art an important part of her own life. As a teacher, Nuccio always integrated arts and crafts into the curriculum of her elementary school students, but never had much time for it herself outside the classroom. She was finally able to get to her own practice after she retired, choosing to explore ceramics at Lincoln Square Pottery Studio – Learning Center.

Nuccio’s inspiration comes from her childhood drawings of little houses, along with the two-flats and apartment buildings she sees while traveling around Chicago. Each little structure is lovingly cut from slab-rolled clay, assembled and delicately glazed. Her unwavering fascination with these forms has yielded a small town’s worth of buildings (to her surprise!).
